Postdoc Definition and Responsibilities

KAUST seeks to attract the highest caliber postdocs to support the University’s research mission. Coming from across the globe, the University's postdocs bring new knowledge and innovative techniques to create a collaborative environment in which ideas and initiatives are continuously cultivated.

A postdoc is a recent recipient of a doctoral degree (usually within the past five years) who is appointed on a term agreement. A postdoc will advance their research experience and scholarly training under the mentorship and direction of a KAUST faculty mentor, and will work on a project approved by the faculty mentor. With the mentor’s consent, a postdoc is expected to publish their research findings in peer-reviewed journals.

A postdoc is expected to work on a research project assigned by the KAUST faculty mentor. Any change in research plans must be approved by the faculty mentor. All research results must be communicated to the faculty mentor on a regular basis.

The faculty mentor sets the research project and works with the postdoc to develop a research plan and to set goals for the period of training. The faculty mentor approves this plan and provides ongoing mentoring, guidance and support during the term of the agreement.
